Feeling Chilly? Drink Chile!
Updated: Nov 24, 2019
There's just something about the leaves changing colour, the arrival of sweater weather and bold and spicy reds that are a match made in fall heaven. As a huge fan of New World wines, with an ultra soft spot for Chile, I can't help but recommend these gems to help keep you warm.
I had the pleasure of attending a tasting with Vina San Pedro and Tarapaca and have fallen in love with their wines. If you haven't tried them already, you will too. Especially if you have them alongside some killer coppa di parma and smoked gouda.
In typical Chilean style, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere are showstoppers. I was able to taste the San Pedro 1865 Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well the Tarapaca Gran Reserva Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon.
1865 wines are known to showcase the best expressions of grapes within that terroir, and Tarapaca is known for some of the best wines Maipo can offer, and boy to they deliver.
San Pedro 1865 Carmenere - well structured and smooth, this wine is full of flavours of currants, juicy plums and a gentle spice. A finish that boasts vanilla and silky tannins makes this wine ideal on its own or with food.
Tarapaca Carmenere - lovely flavours of tart cherries and plum complemented with soft notes of spice are highlighted with notes of dried roses. A great body makes this the perfect partner to aged cheeses.
San Pedro 1865 Cabernet Sauvignon - fresh flavours of black currants and plum are jam-packed in this wine, complemented with gentle notes of mint and dried flowers. A long, lingering finish is all you could ask for and more.
Tarapaca Cabernet Sauvignon - black fruit and hints of blueberries and notes of lavender and dried leaves. Bright and juicy wine perfect for something meaty.
While my personal favourite would have to be the 1865 Cabernet Sauvignon, all four reds are worth adding to your shopping list. I absolutely loved the florality of these wines and enjoyed how well incorporated the tannins were. If I had to recommend the best pairing for these wines? Enjoy by candlelight with a cheese platter, it will surely be an evening to remember.
Big thank you to iYellow Wine Club, Philippe Dandurand wines, and Vina San Pedro Tarapaca.
