Konzelmann Estates Winery
Updated: Nov 24, 2019
You know it's Friday when all you want to do is talk about (and drink) wine.
It has been one crazy week for most of us, and if you're looking for a great way to unwind this weekend, look no further than Konzelmann Estates Winery in Niagara.
This past Sunday my sister and I ventured out to Niagara to taste Konzelmann's portfolio, explore their cellar, pair their wines with cheese and crackers and also copious amounts of junkfood. (I'm still obsessing over how well their icewine paired with blue cheese and how delicious fuzzy peaches are with their peach wine).
They lie in the Niagara Escarpment and are the only Niagara winery to back directly onto Lake Ontario. This is not only GORGEOUS to look at, but the lake provides a natural cooling influence to the vineyard. As the weather continues to improve, I foresee many afternoons spent enjoying their patio with a glass of wine and some awesome lake and vineyard views.
When we arrived we were greeted by Veronica who was super knowledgeable and showed us around the vineyard and told us the history of their winery. Originally from Germany, the Konzelmann family had been making wines since 1893. Demand for their great wines kept growing, and news was spreading about Ontario as an upcoming wine region. They expanded their winery into Niagara and the rest is history.
They are producing some delicious cool climate wines, and are known for their spectacular icewines. While they have a whole spectrum of red, white and sparkling wines, here are our favourites.
Konzelmann #Merlot, which was fruity with very gentle tannins. It was full of cherry flavours, and is a gorgeous pairing to some aged cheddar cheese.
We also really enjoyed the #PinotBlanc, which had a ripe fruit profile but was still dry and refreshing. Great flavours of pear, peach, a touch of florality and some banana. Great with mozzarella, and likely even better with mozzarella sticks.
We adored the 2015 Vidal #Icewine, we are huge fans of Vidal icewines, but particularly enjoyed this one. A gorgeous rich icewine with aromas of honey, glycerin and candied pear. We really liked the slight notes of orange zest and almonds which made this stand out as an incredible wine.
Konzelmann is located in a cool climate area, and they have really mastered making delicious, approachable wines. Part of that is due to great winemaking, but a lot of it has to do with their wonderful property and the climate.
Niagara region is known to produce cool climate wines, with great acidity and green and citrus fruit flavours in white wine, and red fruit flavours in red wines. Konzelmann is no exception to that, and they have carefully chosen varietals that excel in cool climates such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and of course Vidal for icewine.
They have positioned their vines so they are perpendicular to the Lake, which allows the Lake breezes to move up and down each row. Their winemaker has opted to use vertical shoot positioning to keep airflow to their grapes, and to prevent mildew and moisture from building up within the vines. This means healthier grapes!
Overall we adored our visit, and were so pleased to learn about their wines, and we are definitely excited to taste what's in the goodie bags we brought home and can't wait to go back.
