The Perfect Wine Getaway - Adamo Estate Winery
Updated: Nov 24, 2019
'Tis the season of long weekends, sunny days and weekend getaways, and I'm soaking up every moment of it! We're all busy and when we can get away from work, relaxing is key... and with wine of course!
If you're looking to put your feet up and sip some wine on the patio as a girls weekend getaway or a romantic stay-cation, look no further than Adamo Estate Winery at Hockley Valley. It really is the perfect mini-getaway.
It is a gem about an hour outside of Toronto, near Orangeville, Ontario (Fun Fact: I used to live there!). I was very lucky to visit Adamo Estate Winery and Hockley Valley Resort and it came at the perfect time as a relaxing stay in advance of my trip to Spain. (Who doesn't want to enjoy food, wine, a comfy sleep and gorgeous outdoor scenery before jumping on a plane?) I guess that's why they call Friday nights Wine & Unwind!
The staff were so lovely upon to us upon arrival. We popped by the winery in the afternoon on Friday for an exciting tour of the gorgeous property with Shannon the Hospitality Manager. We came at an exciting time as the vines had just been unburied from the winter and are slowly coming back to life. (Fact: Since they grow grapes in a colder climate, it is necessary to bury the vines to protect them from the icy cold!)
The winery is filled with treasures that are tied to the beginnings of Adamo Estate Winery, and to origins of the Adamo family. A family run business, Adamo Estate Winery and Hockley Valley Resort really incorporate their own philosophies in a stunning way that is true to themselves.
The chandelier upon walking into the winery is made from the first barrels of red and white wine that they produced, and it was made by the family!
After we toured the winery and got a sneak peek at some exciting spring releases, Shannon and the staff also treated us to a portfolio tasting and were we ever impressed!
If you haven't ever paired your wines with fried pasta, you have to. You will never have another cracker with a tasting again.
We tasted ten wines, and we were fans of all of them. Some of our favourites were the Chardonnay and the Pét-Nat (Stay tuned for reviews of these wines!). In fact I loved the Chardonnay so much I picked up a bottle!
For those of you who know me, no wine tasting is complete without cheese. We ordered the cheese plate to enhance our tasting and man are those cheeses incredible, and work incredibly well with both light bodied and full bodied reds and whites.
When we finished our tasting and were delightfully full with wine and cheese, we checked into our room and cozied up before attending the launch of Wine & Unwind, a wine and appetizer evening hosted at the winery.
Once we had gotten dressed, we enjoyed a glass of wine at the bar, and took the shuttle back over to the winery (yes, Houston they have a shuttle, so you needn't worry about how much wine you enjoy).
We made it in time to sit on the patio and watch the sunset over the rolling hills of the vineyard.
We ordered a seafood tower for dinner and were totally wowed. This came with crab legs, shrimp, seafood salad, oysters, The crab legs were phenomenal and we loved the ahi tuna. It was perfectly paired to the bottle of Sogno we enjoyed, which is Italian for 'Dream' and represents the dream the Adamo family had of owning a winery. It is a dry, unoaked Chardonnay packed with acidity from the cool climate in which it was grown. It was excellent with our crab legs!
When it got a bit chilly outside, we were thrilled to see our table featured a fireplace to keep us warm. Nothing was better than enjoying a glass of buttery Chardonnay fireside with some chocolate torte and an affogato.
The next morning we enjoyed a beautiful buffet breakfast, some excellent espresso, and enjoyed some of the grounds of the gorgeous resort. We will definitely be back for a longer stay so we can enjoy the spa and the golf course.
We had such a lovely stay at Hockley Valley Resort and adored our time at the winery. While it was only a one night stay, it was plenty to gear us up for a great week in Europe and was totally relaxing. We left feeling relaxed, and ready to take on the week and were looking forward to coming home to enjoy the souvenirs we purchased at the winery. The seafood at Wine & Unwind was to die for, the wines were excellent, our room so luxurious combined with top notch service, we would recommend this stay-cation to anyone, and would recommend Adamo wines to all our friends.
